Don’t forget to buy Mauritian Rupees (MUR) before travelling to Mauritius
Planning a trip to the dreamy island of Mauritius? If you're after a relaxing holiday in a paradise of white-sand beaches and turquoise waters, you’ve made an excellent choice. To make the most of your getaway, we recommend preparing well in advance—starting with learning about the local currency. Mauritius uses the Mauritian Rupee (MUR). While you’ll be able to use your credit card for many purchases, not everything can be paid for electronically.
That’s why it’s a smart idea to check the MUR exchange rate and exchange your SEK for Mauritian Rupees before your trip. Doing so ensures you get a competitive rate, avoid unnecessary stress on arrival, and are fully equipped to enjoy your adventure.
Practical budgeting tips
You can find comfortable mid-range accommodation in stunning surroundings for as little as €40 per night.
We recommend a daily travel budget of approximately 2,000 MUR, which should cover accommodation, meals, local transport, and leave some extra for souvenirs and excursions.

Suggestions for your stay in Mauritius
Mauritius is a hiker's paradise with many scenic trails. The Le Morne Brabant mountain hike rewards you with some of the island’s most spectacular views.
Take time to visit nearby islands such as Île aux Bénitiers (island of barnacles), Île aux Cerfs (island of deer), Île aux Aigrettes (island of clams) and more.
If you're a diving enthusiast, Mauritius’ rich marine life won’t disappoint. Dive into the crystal-clear waters to encounter an incredible variety of species—including, occasionally, whales.
To truly experience the island's multicultural heritage, visit the Grand Bassin Hindu temple, Chinese pagodas, mosques, Christian churches, and above all, talk to the locals—who are famously welcoming. It’s a great way to better understand the island’s culture and traditions.
When do you need cash in Mauritius?
Cash still plays an essential role in everyday life in Mauritius. During your trip, it is therefore important to carry Mauritian rupees in cash to cover most of your expenses.
Your MUR in cash will be useful when making purchases in small shops or at tropical fruit stands, especially if they are located outside the most touristy areas.
Most market stalls on Mauritius do not have payment terminals, so you will need to pay in cash.
Public transport on the island accepts cash payments only. As for taxis, while it is technically possible to pay via Mobile Money or by card, most drivers prefer to be paid in cash.
In general, we recommend exchanging your SEK to MUR before travelling to avoid having to withdraw money on the island: you may incur additional fees, which would directly impact your travel budget.
